Are you alright? The symbolism in this piece is fantastic, but remember that the teenage years are the worst part in life. It only gets better as a person starts to mature. Pills aren't always the best solution to depression and other mental illnesses.

Why did you bite yourself, you wouldn't have to eat all those pills if you hadn't given yourself rabies.

As everyone else has said, this is a powerful picture. It's so powerful that nothing I could say would give it justice.

I really like this picture :) It is so ironic, where the colours are so soothing and peaceful, but the message is quite disturbing and sad

This is such a powerful picture.

I don't even know where to start with how effective this is. There are so many levels to this seemingly simple picture.

The lighting and shadows, the way the bandage is on the wrist, just how the pill blends in with the rice. This touches me as a partial reflection of my own personal journey.

I hope this picture goes beyond the borders of dA. It should become iconic.

Indeed!

I wish we were better at teaching young people that puberty isn't just about sex; that the wild hormonal changes mean we are trapped for years in a storm of drastic moods--ALL the moods, good and bad--that seem too huge to bear, but that if we can hold on long enough, the hormone storms settle down and our life DOES GET BETTER.

Yes, the things we feel so deeply about ARE real, despite adults who've forgotten what it was like, but how well we can COPE with all that love and loss and rage and fear and shame? That's what gets better. And reaching maturity also comes with more freedom AND experience to make our own choices, and to know we can adjust them if we go wrong.

In the meantime? People who cut themselves AREN'T just "trying to get attention" in some manipulative way; they are also people so brave that they can do whatever it takes to be willing to live another minute, hour, day.... They cut because it's the only way to survive the despair long enough to keep living.

Me, I couldn't even do that; I'm only alive because my deepest moments of despair left me without even enough energy to get out of bed, much less find a knife or get up on the roof of tall building. But that was forty years ago, and life's been well worth living ever since I reached the age where the unbearable mood swings settled down into calm waters, where the remaining storms were something I now know I can survive.

I hate high school so much. It can destroy you badly especially when you don't fit in with the norms.  Regardless of were you from, we are all human. Thank you for this thought provoking photo and I hope you and anyone who reads this will be well in the future.

An illustration of a Japanese(?) student suffering high-school depression - as such, I believe I could understand it better if I could read kanji.  But alas! I can't ^^;

This is something unique, beautiful, haunting, and completely certain. As a person who struggles almost dialy with depression, this portrays so well what it is to lose control of them and need professional help to cope with everything.

Thank you. Thank you for showing everyone how it is.

Interesting piece, however as a young adult sometimes I long for the simplicities of high school that back then seemed so much more complicated.  However, in retrospect the responsibilities of being an adult are much more fierce.  I love this, though.  I empathize very much with this.
